Why You Cannot Use Your Factory Shifter

The early Nova automatic console shifter mounted to the side of the Powerglide transmission. The Powerglide tail housing was specially cast to accommodate the shifter. As a result, reusing this shifter with a different style transmission is a big problem. Even if you can devise and construct the necessary brackets to mount the shifter to a different transmission, it will not end up in the right spot since the newer transmissions are wider and larger. So the main problems are:

  1. There no simple place to mount the factory shifter
  2. The console is very low to the floor and most floor mounted shifters do not fit under it
  3. It remains functionally a 2-speed shifter
The Shiftworks Solution

This new Shiftworks® floor shifter has been designed to properly function with whatever automatic GM transmission you decide to use in your vehicle. It uses a rod linkage just like the factory shifter did, but utilizes right and left hand thread so you can make your final adjustments with a simple twist of the rod. Also, since this shifter mounts flush with the floor for console clearance, your able to use this shifter in almost any custom application as well. We even install and set up a new neutral safety / back up light switch so it's ready to simply wire into your car!

To Use with Powerglide Transmissions (Call to Order)

Powerglide transmissions use a variety of Range Select Shafts.  The use of any console shifter requires the transmission be able to accept the proper Range Select Lever for that particular shifter and/or shaft.  Shiftworks® offers several products that allow you to make this connection regardless of what Powerglide you may have. Click here to learn what you may need.

*** For 6-Spd Automatics, know that you cannot manually select all 6 gears of your transmission with the shifter. The 6L80E/6L90E's shift pattern is P_R_N_D_M. The "M" position tells the transmission to look for an electronic input (ex. steering wheel paddle shifters / buttons) on how and when to shift up or down. Putting the shifter in "D" or "Drive" will allow the transmission to operate through all gears on it's own based on what the computer tells it to do.
